Rams and Fells Reach Agreement
Updated-- One year deal.
Confirmed--The Rams and TE Daniel Fells have come to terms on a new contract.
Fells had 21 catches and 3 TDs last season, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement prior to deadline and Fells had become a free agent.
Contract terms were not yet announced.
Updated--here's the official release:
RAMS RE-SIGN TIGHT END DANIEL FELLS
ST. LOUIS - Tight end Daniel Fells, who became a restricted free agent Friday, signed a new contract that will keep him in St. Louis, the Rams announced Tuesday.
"We are happy to re-sign Daniel Fells," said Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo. "He is a player who worked very hard last year to learn the offense and contribute to our team. Our staff is excited about his continued development."
Fells caught 21 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns last season, including a two-touchdown performance in Week 3 against the Packers. He played in 14 games with four starts before a knee injury landed him on reserve/injured for the final two weeks of the season.
Fells (6-4, 270) arrived in St. Louis in October of 2008 when the Rams signed him off of Tampa Bay's practice squad. Prior to joining the Rams, Fells spent time with the Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons.

Is it Really Business as Usual
Business as usual.
That was one of the phrases used to describe how the Rams would be operated as the process continues on the sale of the team.
Now that we're nearly a week into free agency, one may question if that is actually the case.
A quick review of last year...
-Free agency opened on February 27th. The Rams had made it clear that among their needs, they wanted to upgrade the offensive line, add a fullback, and find a replacement for Corey Chavous.
-February 28th, the Rams signed C Jason Brown.
-March 4th, Ron Bartell signs a new multi-year deal to stay in St. Louis.
-March 11th, S James Butler and FB Mike Karney are both signed.
Granted, those moves occurred over a two week period and we are not quite half-way there at this point in 2010.
No offense to A.J. Feeley and Fred Robbins--but the Rams haven't made the same impact or shown the same urgency thus far in free agency.
It's no secret that the Rams have wanted to find a complimentary back to Steven Jackson. Darren Sproles had been on the radar, but was tendered by San Diego so that took him off the market. However, Chester Taylor--who had served a similar role in Minnesota, was there to be had. Instead, Taylor signed with Chicago.
Thomas Jones?? Signed by Kansas City.
Maybe those two wanted more playing time than available in St. Louis. Mike Martz, in fact, has recently stated that he may use a two-back set in Chicago so Taylor may not be a back up and Jones will certainly get a lot of carries for the Chiefs.
But what about the pass rush?? Robbins may help on the inside, but the Rams top two sack leaders, James Hall and Leonard Little, are both unrestricted free agents--and visiting other teams.
Kyle Vanden Bosch signed with Detroit--can understand that, he wanted to reunite with his former d-coord and now Lions head coach Jim Schwartz.
But what about Aaron Kampman. The former Pro Bowler in Green Bay wanted to get back to a 4-3 defense, and chose Jacksonville.
And Kampman is a player that Billy Devaney acknowledged the Rams had interest in.
Kampman is coming off of a knee injury, but was this a case of him not checking out or the Rams being overlooked--or outbid.
Tight end is another concern. Randy McMichael won't be back and Daniel Fells--who caught 3 TDs last season, wasn't tendered and is visiting with other teams. The Rams remain in the mix, but why did it get to that point??
Fells ability isn't in question, not reaching a contract before the deadline was a financial issue. Does that number now go up or down on the free agent market--we'll see.
Devaney has urged patience, stating that there will be several roster bonuses kicking in soon which will provide a new wave of talent on the free agent market.
But with the looming ownership change, the minimum tender to Oshiomogho Atogwe, and lack of a big free agent signing early--it makes you wonder...
Is it really business as usual at Rams Park??

Uncapped Not Undisciplined
Maybe the owners are finally learning.
With no salary cap for the first time since 1993, there was some expectation that NFL teams--or at least a couple of them, would be unable to control themselves and throw crazy money at free agents.
Thus far, it hasn't happened.
On the surface, Julius Peppers signing with Chicago for six years at $91.5 million may seem like that kind of over-inflated deal, but Peter King of SI.com and others have noted the Bears have an out clause which could greatly deflate the deal.
Peppers is only guaranteed the first year of the deal--somewhere around $20 million. According to Peter King of SI.com, the other years are only health-guarantees, Peppers only is guaranteed the big money if he were hurt--otherwise, Chicago can cut him based on performance and owe nothing.
So if the Bears decide to go a different direction, change coaches, or have issues when a salary cap returns to the league, they won't be stuck with the monster deal this appeared to be.
Other teams are taking a similiar approach, where they aren't backloading contracts but making sure there aren't any penalties if they release a player early.
RAMdom notes:
-New Rams quarterback A.J. Feeley is also a newlywed, tying the knot on February 13 with long-time girlfriend and Olympic soccer player Heather Mitts. The two leave for their honeymoon next week.
-In case you missed the Tweet yesterday (@StullySTL), Leonard Little will be visiting the Saints on Thursday, however, the Rams are still in the mix. Little and Spags spoke as recently as last week and there is still an open door for his return.
-Jonathan Wade becomes the first of the former Rams to sign with a different team this offseason, agreeing to a 1 year deal with Detroit.
-Even though his 7 sacks last season would've led the Rams, don't expect DE Greg Ellis to land here via free agency. He's looking to play in a 3-4 defense.

Rams Sign Robbins to 3yr Deal
The Rams have reached agreement with DT Fred Robbins on a three-year deal worth up to $12 million with incentives.
As a defensive captain with the New York Giants, Robbins won Super Bowl XLII with Steve Spagnuolo and has missed only three games over the last eight seasons.
Robbins, who is 6'4 and 317lbs, had 25 tackles and 2 sacks last season in New York.
At worst, the move gives the Rams some added size on the defensive front and another player that is familiar with the Spagnuolo scheme. Robbins could also provide some mentorship if the team chooses to draft Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy.

Rams Poised to sign Robbins
Defensive tackle Fred Robbins remains in St. Louis after meeting with Steve Spagnuolo and the Rams over the weekend.
Robbins was a captain on the New York Giants team which won the Super Bowl a couple of years ago--and his agent, Brian Mackler, made it clear that visiting the Rams first in free agency was all about the chance to reunite with Spags.
Besides being capable of playing a true nose or three-technique in a 4-3, Robbins has also played at defensive end in a 3-4 scheme.
Robbins will turn 33 years old on March 25 and was a second round draft pick of Minnesota in 2000.
The deal between the two sides could be worked out by early afternoon.
