While no one is happy to see Donnie Avery go down with a fracture in his foot, the Rams are taking the cautious approach before seeking help from the outside.

Ten wide receivers, counting Avery, are in training camp--and the remaining nine will be given even more opportunity to make or break the roster.

Billy Devaney shared on The Bernie Miklasz show that he believes Tim Carter and Derek Stanley have big-play ability. Carter will have to show more consistency in catching than he has in years past, but several on the team tell me he may be the fastest on the squad.

Stanley is feeling good in his comeback from knee surgery and has added value in the return game. Laurent Robinson has regained his confidence and worked alongside Keenan Burton with the first unit on Monday.

Ronald Curry and Brooks Foster appear to have more in common than TarHeel basketball, as both have made more than a few athletic catches. And Avery being out also gives more reps for Jarret Byers, Nate Jones, and Sean Walker.

Point is this, the Rams can wait through at least Friday before making a move. The available free agents will still be there. And none are Donnie Avery.

See what this current group can do against the Jets--allow someone to step up and answer the bell. New York won't be playing to "thud", it will be live and for high stakes--jobs are on the line for both teams.

Practice and other notes:

-Although no official designation has taken place, James Laurinaitis spent his second consecutive day in the middle with the first unit.

-Besides the Billy Bajema-James Butler scuffle, Larry Grant had a couple of words for Mark Setterstrom during drills. Neither were major or expect to be long lasting.

-Craig Dahl looks close to return, testing his hamstring with sprints during practice.

-Eric Bassey will wait a couple of weeks before having surgery to repair his torn ACL. He plans to stay in St. Louis for his rehab and stay involved with the team.
