The Cardinals are heading to the post-season, proving the pre-season predictions wrong. But that's nothing new for this ball club. Pitching has been key. So has Albert Pujols, followed by the additions of Matt Holliday, Mark DeRosa and Julio Lugo.
Often overlooked is Skip Schumaker. The conversion to 2nd base went better than expected. But what's been most impressive this season is his offense. The Cardinal leadoff hitter is batting .307. A 3-hit night Monday in Houston is his 15th 3-hit game of the season. How valuable is that to the Cards? In those 15-games, the Cardinals are 14-1.
Matt Holliday drove in his 50th RBI last night as a Cardinal. Not bad for just his 53rd game wearing the birds on the bat.
Obviously, the left fielder will be key in the post-season. In recent years Holliday has been the major league's best run producer in September and October. He has 127 RBI's since 2005.
