Burwell's got something to say: David Vobora acted like a man yesterday when he actually answered questions about his suspension for PEDs. Parris' got something to say: Cliff Lee's complete game shutout of the Yankees last night and the fact that Pedro Martinez is pitching tonight; puts the Phillies in a great position to win their second World Series in a row. Parris is happy to see the Blues played a complete game last night and now all they need to do is start winning at home. One listener thinks that if Albert Pujols likes the hiring of Mark McGwire, then maybe everyone else should.
9:23a-- The guys played a few clips of Albert Pujols' interview on Mike and Mike earlier this morning after winning the MLBPA award for National League Player of the Year. Pujols is extremely happy to have Tony La Russa back as manager for another year. Pujols thinks La Russa is the best in the game and they have great mutual respect for each other. Parris and Burwell think Pujols was a major factor in La Russa's return. Pujols is also excited to have Mark McGwire as a hitting coach and back in a Cardinal uniform. Albert thinks McGwire has a lot to offer all of the Cardinals and that bringing him in was a great idea not only for the ball club, but for the fans as well. Parris believes some people are blurring the lines between the alleged Mark McGwire steroid abuse issue and whether or not he will be a successful hitting coach.
9:43a-- Cardinals insider Derrick Goold joined the show to talk a little baseball. Goold thinks Cliff Lee's performance against the Yankees last night was the best game pitched by an NL pitcher in the World Series since Bob Gibson's 17 strikeouts in Game 1 in 1968. Goold says the Cardinals and John Smoltz have mutual interest in his potential return to the Redbirds next season. Goold believes the Cardinals would like to fill in the remaining 2 rotation spots from within; he lists Blake Hawksworth, Mitchell Boggs or Jaime Garcia as possibilities. Goold thinks Mark McGwire can be a successful hitting coach based on what he has heard from other players and coaches.
10:02a-- Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols joined the show. Pujols said his elbow feels great and he's excited to get back on the field. Pujols says his elbow was hurting during much of the season, but he's not using that as an excuse for his power numbers slightly declining. Albert expressed his excitement for the hiring of Mark McGwire and doesn't think McGwire will be much of a distraction during the season. Pujols can't wait to see what Big Mac is going to bring to the Cardinals' clubhouse next spring. Albert says the hitting coach isn't to blame for their lack of production in September; it's the lineups'. Pujols says he wants to be a Cardinal for the rest of his career and he absolutely loves the city of St. Louis. Pujols says that he would love to retire as a Cardinal. 10:23a -- It's time for the Thursday edition of the PB Jam! Today's questions are:
- The Yankees still your pick to win the World Series?
- Who wins Game 2 tonight?
- Will the Rams win this Sunday?
- Carpenter wins Comeback Player of the Year; Adam Wainwright wins Outstanding Pitcher in the NL, who wins the Cy Young?
- Would you rather live the next 20 years of your life with having everything you want and having a perfect life or continue to live your life the way it is right now?
- Would you rather have a major operation with the only anesthesia being acupuncture or the same operation with hypnosis?
-Would you rather be haunted by a demon like the couple in "Paranormal Activity", chased by Michael Meyers like in Halloween, or escape of Jigsaw's puzzles like in the Saw movies?
10:42a-- Rams insider Brian Stull joined the guys to talk some football. Stull says the FDA is to blame for the David Vobora suspension, although it's still on Vobora because you are responsible for what goes into your own body. Stull thinks Vobora returning could be a breath of fresh air for the Rams, mainly because he is well rested and has fresh legs. Stull says the fact that the Rams have stayed somewhat competitive with good teams is another good sign and he believes that the Rams will finally get their first win this Sunday in Detroit. Stull also believes that Brandon Gibson will make his Rams debut this week as well and expects him to play a pretty big factor in the offense.
11:02a-- Rams GM Billy Devaney joined the show to talk some St. Louis football. Devaney thinks that it is very important for the Rams to get their first win, because he believes things will start to come together at that point. He is disappointed that the Rams have come close several times this year, but he has no regrets so far this year. Devaney says the front office has not yet discussed what type of player they will be taking in next year's draft because there is still a lot of football to be played and the rest of this season will determine who they draft. Devaney says that as long as practice goes well for Brandon Gibson, he will more than likely be dressed and ready to go in Detroit. Devaney says that Marc Bulger is the starting quarterback without question; regardless of his recent struggles. Devaney is also eager to get David Vobora back onto the field because he's a playmaker.
