Go Green - At Home!
- Swap out incandescent bulbs in your light fixtures for compact fluorescent bulbs instead.
- Check the temperature setting on your water-heater and reduce the setting to 120F.
- Invest in a programmable thermostat so you can automate the daily settings to vary between daytime and nighttime.
- Install a low-flow shower head if the model you currently have uses more than 2.5 gallons per minute.
- Install faucet aerators on each faucet and always turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
- Consider taking a shower instead of soaking in the tub. A shower uses 2/3 the amount of water as a bath.
- Before you take your mower for a spin around the yard, take the grass catcher off. The sun and rain will break down the grass clippings left behind and reward you with instant compost.
- When doing laundry, only do full loads and wash with cold water as much as possible. Up to 85% of the energy used for washing clothes goes to heating the water.
- Hang your clothes outside to dry or use a drying rack.
- Invest in a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts down on "phantom" energy use.
- Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs and dairy as often as possible.
- Install a water filter to purify your tap water instead of stocking bottled water in the fridge. You'll save money and cut down on waste.
- Make it a habit to use non-toxic cleaning products.
