The World Series ended early Thursday morning and the Cardinals announced not terribly long after that they would be extending Mike Matheny’s managerial tenure.
This shouldn’t have come as a surprise. More along the surprising lines are decisions to pick up Jaime Garcia’s $12 million option and let Brandon Moss test free agency.
Bernie devotes much of Friday’s program to these Cardinals topics and welcomes 101ESPN Cardinals insider Jen Langosch to the studio for most of the 9 a.m. hour.
Other guests include ESPN.com SEC reporter David Ching and NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly.
Cardinals Extend Matheny, Prevent Lame Duck Season
It’s rare for a team to allow a manager to enter the final year of a contract, especially when they’ve had as much success as Matheny. There was never any question whether he’d receive an extension.
You don’t sack a manager who has won as often and who has the potential for growth Matheny has. He regressed in 2016, but the club still logged an 86-76 regular season record.
Interview w/ ESPN.com SEC Football and LSU Reporter – David Ching
Ching joins to discuss LSU’s current state, the team under Ed Orgeron, this weekend’s chances against Alabama, and where Les Miles could land as head coach in the future.
“LSU is one of the few programs that can recruit at a similar level as Alabama, but Alabama is still a deeper, more talented team. LSU is going to have to play a cleaner game than they’ve played all season.”
Three Blues Takeaways Following 6-2 Loss in Dallas
The Blues appear to be pressing and are in desperate need for their stars to start playing like stars. They’re lucky the rest of the Central Division are also struggling to figure things out.

Interview w/ Former NFL General Manager, Current NFL Network Analyst – Charley Casserly
Casserly talks Derek Carr’s performance, Cam Newton’s recent complaints, the Chiefs playing well, Matt Ryan, and other storylines heading into Week 9.
“I think it’s going to be [Carr] and Andrew Luck…Luck has the most ability, but clearly doesn’t have the best supporting cast around him. I think [Carr] and Luck are the next generation Brady-Manning…”
Cards Pick Up Garcia’s Option, Will Let Moss Test Free Agency
The Birds didn’t waste any time making their first offseason moves as the announced they would pick up Jaime Garcia’s $12 million 2017 option. They also unsurprisingly declined options on both Jordan Walden and Matt Holliday.
It’s unclear what role Garcia will play in 2017, but rotation depth is never a bad thing. It’s also been reported the team will allow Brandon Moss test the free agent market. Bernie believes making Moss a qualifying offer would be a better course of action.
NFL Midseason Report
Does Tom Brady still have a shot at MVP even with his four-game suspension? Is anyone close to Ezekiel Elliott in the Rookie of the Year race? Bernie addresses these and other midseason topics this segment.

Three Segments w/ MLB.com Cardinals Beat Writer and 101ESPN Insider – Jen Langosch
Jen joins Bernie in the studio to discuss Mike Matheny’s extension, whether the skipper will learn from his mistakes, coaching staff changes, and lack of interest in Brandon Moss.
“The Cardinals prioritized getting this extension done before spring training because they didn’t want this to become a talking point…Mike Matheny wasn’t going anywhere.”
