Daily Bernie: Jan. 10 – Sheehan Discusses the ‘Matheny Factor;’ Backes to Make STL Return

Mike Matheny may be St. Louis’ most polarizing figure who isn’t a politician. Such is the life of a baseball manager in a baseball-crazy city.

Backes has 11 assists and 10 goals this season for Boston.

The skipper’s track record is a subject of chatter on Tuesday’s Bernie Miklasz Show, as your host debates with Sports Illustrated’s Joe Sheehan on if Matheny will cost the club wins in 2017.

And STL favorite David Backes makes his return to the Scottrade ice Tuesday at a time his former team is sorely missing his services.

Bernie talks Blues hockey and also welcomes former football Cardinals and Alabama head coach Gene Stallings to cover Monday’s classic National Championship.

Clemson dominates National Championship QB battle

Everyone wants to point to the Kiffin-Sark storyline, but Alabama’s offense was in decline heading into Monday’s title game. Quarterback Jalen Hurts’ numbers prove this.

Meanwhile, DeShaun Watson proved he was the best player on the field. This game boiled down to a true freshman in Hurts against college football’s best player.

Welcome back, Backes

David Backes makes his return to Scottrade Center Tuesday as a Boston Bruin. The Note’s former captain has been limited to 35 games this season, but still has 11 goals and 10 assists centering a top line.

This highlights how much the Blues miss him in the middle. There’s been a revolving door in Backes’ absence and the results have been underwhelming thus far.

What does this title mean for Dabo Swinney? What’s the loss mean for Nick Saban?

Swinney can finally add that National Championship to his already stellar resume. The coach has won 10 or more games six seasons in a row and has accomplished almost everything a coach can.

Saban has four titles, is 210-60-1 all-time, and is the game’s best modern coach bar none. Does one loss affect his legacy?

NFL coaching carousel gets its first spin with Jacksonville hire

The Jaguars hired interim coach Doug Marrone as their full-time guy Monday, in addition to Tom Coughlin as executive VP of football operations.

This leaves five spots open: Buffalo, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver and San Francisco. Bernie lists the big remaining candidates and where they’ve all interviewed.

‘To tell the truth’ Tuesday

Bernie doesn’t hold back this segment in assessing the Rams coaching search and how ludicrous it is to involve Les Snead in said search when the GM may ultimately be let go.

Allen to start vs. Bruins: Blues need more from him

Ken Hitchcock recently said goaltending will ultimately decide whether the Blues are a playoff team. Allen’s save percentage has dropped to .904 from last season’s .920.

The Blues currently rank ninth in goals and 24th in goals allowed. Allen returns Tuesday in the last of a six-game homestand.

Interview w/ Sports Illustrated baseball writer – Joe Sheehan

Sheehan discusses which sluggers are still on the market, which NL teams have improved most, and how many 2017 games Mike Matheny will cost the Cardinals.
