Daily Bernie: Apr. 21 – Crunch Time for Tarasenko?; Cards Suiting Cuban Prospect Luis Robert

Vladimir Tarasenko has been far from bad this first round series, but he’s still yet to light the lamp. As a matter of fact, he’s failed to score in nine of his past 10 playoff games.

Tarasenko has two assists and 16 shots this postseason.

That doesn’t change the fact the Blues have had the most quality chances with Vladdy on the ice and Bernie thinks Game 5 would be the perfect time to put one through. Your host talks Saturday’s matchup with St. Paul Pioneer-Press columnist Brian Murphy.

And the Cardinals have the money, so is there any real reason they shouldn’t win the Luis Robert sweepstakes? Your host devotes time to this subject and welcomes Pro Football Talk’s Steve Palazzolo for some NFL Draft insight.

What’s going on with Carlos Martinez?

Martinez allowed five earned runs in five innings on seven hits and two homers in Thursday’s 7-5 loss to Milwaukee. So what’s the deal?

Well, he’s also walked 11 through his last three starts and has been allowing hitters the upper hand in too many counts. The Cards need their new ace to find consistency and they need it soon.

Interview w/ St. Paul Pioneer-Press sports columnist – Brian Murphy

Murphy gives the Minnesota perspective on the Blues-Wild series and discusses why the Note’s 3-1 lead seems closer than it should.

Be concerned with Kevin Siegrist

Siegrist has walked 10 batters and given up two home runs in just 6.1 innings of 2017 work. That’s good for a 9.95 ERA thus far.

But this goes beyond the peripherals, as Siegrist got a late spring start due to shoulder issues and has admitted he’s not quite over them. Is it fatigue? Is it more? Will he ever be the same?

Is it pressure time for Tarasenko?

The Blues have a 3-1 series lead, but lost Game 4 which has led to many Vladimir Tarasenko search parties. Vladdy does have the team’s highest 2017 playoff Corsi rating and they’ve had the most quality shots when he’s on the ice.

Does this give him a pass? Of course not. But we’re still hearing idiots ripping Tarasenko for the wrong reasons. The only meaningful stat: Vladdy has failed to score in nine of his last 10 postseason games. Saturday’s Game 5 would be a fine time to bust out.

Do the Cardinals have any excuse to finish second in Luis Robert sweepstakes?

Top Cuban prospect Robert is now a free agent and can sign with an MLB team come May 20. The Cardinals, along with the White Sox, Astros and Padres, have strong interest.

It’s been reported Robert has a first-round pick’s upside and will command more money than the Cardinals have already spent on international players. They still have money to spend though, so why should they finish second here?

Keys to a Blues’ Game 5 win in Minnesota

More offense goes without saying, which means the Blues have to control the puck more. They’re currently ranked last of the 16 playoff teams in possession metrics.

We talked about getting Tarasenko on the board, but secondary guys like David Perron, Patrik Berglund and Alexander Steen would be nice to. It’s also no secret scoring first has played a large success role this series.
