Let Willie McGee’s ’97 Opening Day Walk-Off Make You Feel Better Today

As a general rule, Willie McGee makes everyone feel better all the time…It’s a scientific fact. No one ever watched a Willie interview or highlight and didn’t feel at least a faint glimmer of hope and happiness for having done so.

The late, great Jack Buck once remarked upon Willie’s late-career return to St. Louis: “He looks like he doesn’t have a friend in the world. Meanwhile, all the world is his friend.”

So on this gloomy and chilly St. Louis Thursday, a night removed from a Blues loss and two days from a four-error Cardinals outing, why not enjoy Willie’s Opening Day 1997 walk-off home run:

Add in Ozzie Smith’s commentary for his old buddy’s late-game heroics and how can you not have at least a brief case of the warm-and-fuzzies? Willie played through the 1999 season here in his baseball home and gave many reluctant curtain-calls throughout his final three seasons.
