It’s been easy at times to question Mike Matheny’s decision making, but the skipper also deserves credit when it’s due.
Well, it’s due. Bernie talks about Matheny’s contribution to the Cardinal cause on Tuesday’s show and welcomes writer and expert baseball analyst Joe Sheehan and MLB Network’s Jim Kaat.

What’s Matheny’s role been in the Cardinals’ turnaround?
They’ve won 18 of 24 games since April 17 and their skipper has played a large part. They continue to improve defensively and much of it is due to continuity.
Matheny also deserves props for moving Jedd Gyorko, his best home run hitter, to the clean-up spot. It’s a small sample, but Jedd’s done just fine so far.
A Cardinal Surprise! Defense and baserunning have both improved
Another reason the Birds have turned things around: They’ve played sound and fundamental baseball. Timely hitting and a strong rotation deserve much credit, but baserunning and defense have been nice surprises.
They still need to be smarter on the basepaths, but they’re nabbing bases for positive gains and the fielding is much more steady.
