The Opening Drive

The Opening Drive – June 26th, 2023

7:00 –

    MLB London Series

Saturday

 Cubs-9 Cardinals-1

Sunday

Cardinals-7 Cubs-5 Liberatore allows four unearned runs in the first, then he and the bullpen shut out the Cubs until the 8th.

Blues Trade? According to The Athletic, the Blues were prepared to trade Tory Krug and an first round pick to Philadelphia for center Kevin Hayes and defenseman Travis Sanheim, but so far Krug has invoked his no-trade clause and the deal is in limbo.

STLCitySC-2 San Jose Earthquakes-1

Burki stands on his head, recalled just that day, F Sam Adeniran scores 2 goals for CITY

7:15 – Things we loved from the Weekend

7:30 – In 2019, Jack Flaherty had a record setting second half (7-2, 0.91 ERA, 124 strikeouts in 99.1 innings)

After that season, Gerrit Cole of the American League champion Houston Astros left in free agency for a nine year, $324 MM deal. Flaherty’s contract approach caused many to think he was after a Cole contract once he hit free agency. Now, with his latest hip injury, Flaherty looks like his free agency will mirror the injury plagued Michael Wacha after 2019 (one year, $3 MM with the Mets) rather than Cole.

7:45 – TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

8:00 – Fresh Take: Have the Blues gone too far in handing out no trade clauses? Tarasenko had the hammer if they had tried to move him. Krug, Parayko and Leddy all have NTC’s. (The Blues have nine players with no-trade or modified no-trade contracts)

8:15 – BIRD WATCH

8:30 – The Fight

8:45 – With the NBA getting Victor Wembanyama, who are the three athletes you’d pay to see right now?

9:00 – RUSH HOUR RESET

9:15 – STL CITY SC GK & Captain Roman Bürki

9:30 – How do you think MLB did with the London games?

Mets and Phillies in London next season, MLB in Paris in 2025

The London Series is part of the MLB World Tour, created to bring Major League teams and players to a global fan base. It is the league’s and the MLBPA’s largest international plan, featuring as many as 24 regular-season games and as many as 16 exhibition games played in Asia, Europe, Mexico and Latin America through the 2026 season.

What other areas would be good to play in to globalize the sport? More Japan? More Australia? China? India? Dubai?

9:45 – Rocc & Roll
