Favre debates playing…again

Here we go again. Will Brett play, or won’t he?

Brett Favre tells ESPN’s Ed Werder that, if he wants to play football in 2010, he needs ankle surgery. Thing is, Favre doesn’t like surgery. So he’ll have to make the decision as to whether or not playing for the Vikings means enough to him to have surgery.

It’s a rite of spring, isn’t it? This has been going on for almost five years. In September of 2005, he said “At 0-3, I think most people would say, ‘Oh he’s gone after this year, or they won’t even want him back.”

Sure enough, during the winter of ’06, Favre contemplated retirement well into the spring, finally deciding to come back.

After a season that apparently rejuvenated him, Favre decided relatively quickly (for him) that he’d come back for ’07.

Of course, that’s when the craziness started. Favre retired (under pressure?) early in ’08, then decided to come back. After much controversy, he was traded to the Jets. Another retirement led to his requested release by New York and signing with the Vikings last year.

So here we are, for the fifth season in a row, waiting for Brett to decide.

And we will pay attention. The top rated games for FOX, CBS, NBC and ESPN in 2009 were Favre games. The public has a voracious appetite not only for Favre, but for what he’s doing.

Many of us may detest the constant talk, but MOST of us can’t wait to leer at Favre and debate his off-seasons.
