April 8, three days into the baseball season, Cardinals righthander Jason Motte gave up a game winning home run to Johnny Gomes of the Reds.
The texts and e-mails received at 101 ESPN were overwhelming and unanimous…Motte sucks! Who else can we bring up.
I pointed out that, after an opening-day meltdown against Pittsburgh last year, Motte had a terrific streak of 21 scoreless outings in 23 appearances. Maybe the same thing would happen.
Well, it has. After picking up his first save of the season last night, Motte has eight straight scoreless outings that include the save and two holds. In eight innings in those eight outings, he’s given up no runs, five hits, three walks and he’s struck out six. Last night, when the Cardinals absolutely had to have him, he stepped up bigtime.
Opening day and opening week is a big deal, and we should be closer attention to it that a mid-May game. But we need to remember that it’s a long season, and a guy that you think sucks on April 8 had a lot of time to make you look bad.
