There certainly are a lot of Rams fans clamoring for a new quarterback, and it would seem that Marc Bulger needs to have a good 2009 to retain his starting job. There are TONS of extenuating circumstances that have led to Bulger’s struggles of the last two seasons, but the fact of the matter is that the club has gone 5-27 since he signed his big, new contract. Add to that the fact that his personal statistics have ranked in the bottom quarter of the NFL, and he needs to rebound. Bulger performing at his Pro Bowl (2003, 2004, 2006) level is superb…perhaps as good as the Rams can do. If not, where do the Rams look?
The just released Michael Vick? No chance. He doesn’t fit into Steve Spagnuolo’s four pillars for success. Faith, Character, Core Values, Team First. Vick didn’t show much of the last three with the mistakes he made as a Falcon. He left the club high and dry. Add to that the PR problems he’d bring with him, and he’s a no go.
Vince Young? He says he wants to be a Titan, but also says he wants to play. If Kerry Collins has another good season in Tennessee, Young could become available. Young possesses some of the talents of outstanding west coast system quarterbacks like Steve Young and Donovan McNabb. He’s worth looking at.
Kevin Kolb? Philadelphia selected him in the second round of the 2007 draft, so he has two years working with Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmer, who was the quarterbacks coach in Philly. And the rumors of a Kolb trade are out there, especially with Donovan McNabb’s contract revision. If Bulger doesn’t rebound in 2009, there are going to be alternatives beyond the draft. For a Ram fan, it’s worth looking at those guys this pre-season… and picking out your favorite.
