101 ESPN’s Senior Spotlight shines on Jake Nelson of Lafayette High School
Please read on to hear Jake’s mom describe what makes him so special …
Jake has always loved sports and during the last two years at Lafayette, he was a three-sport Varsity athlete while earning a 4.2 GPA.
During basketball camp during the summer before freshman year, Jake tore his meniscus and ACL and fractured his tibia, and was not able to set foot on the football field for even one practice, but he did support the team and kept his sense of humor by working as the “Water Boy” and providing “high quality H2O”!
He worked hard to be ready for the basketball season, made the freshman team and rounded out the year by joining the mens’ volleyball team. Flash forward to his Senior year and Jake experienced tremendous success on the football field (starting linebacker and earned All Conference honors) and basketball court (6’ small forward who successfully defended against guys 6’6” and taller) and was poised to lead as a co-captain of the Mens’ Volleyball team. He had also begun practicing with the track and field team and was excited to challenge himself by competing in various jumping events.
Jake was awarded the Lancer award by the football team, as the player that best represents the program both on and off the field and has been identified as Lafayette’s 2020 Scholar Athlete. He was also recognized as a member of the Academic All State teams for all three sports.
Although his high school athletic career has come to an abrupt end, Jake continually pushes himself to be better through home and gym workouts and training.
Jake plans to attend The Ohio State University in the fall to pursue a degree in business and hopes to join various athletic clubs and intramural teams.
